The Royal Thai Army has officially confirmed the arrival of a new batch of 19 Stryker armored vehicles supplied by the United States, putting an end to speculation sparked by videos circulating on social media showing the vehicles being unloaded at a port.
According to the military, the armored vehicles are part of the first phase of a Foreign Military Sales contract linked to the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program, which transfers surplus equipment from the US Armed Forces to allied countries.
The new batch includes ten infantry carrier vehicles, four reconnaissance variants, four command vehicles, and one unit intended for medical evacuation. Before entering service, all of them will undergo refurbishment and maintenance. Under the program, the United States provides the equipment, while Thailand is responsible for transportation, refurbishment, and logistical support costs.
The variety of versions delivered shows that the objective goes beyond simply increasing the armored vehicle fleet. With specialized vehicles for reconnaissance, operational coordination, and the treatment of wounded military personnel, the Thai Army seeks to establish mechanized units capable of operating independently on the battlefield, significantly expanding its operational capabilities.
Thailand has invested in the Stryker platform since 2019, when it acquired its first 60 vehicles under a contract worth approximately US$175 million approved by the US government. The purchase enabled the creation of the 111th and 112th Stryker Combat Regiments, while the latest deliveries reinforce the country’s strategy of continuing to expand this mechanized force and gradually replacing the older M113 armored vehicles still in operation.
